If you love a trip to the movies we’ve got a very special treat for you. The BUCKiTDREAM team has scoured the earth, strained our eyes, watched hundreds of films and we’ve managed to find the coolest movie theaters in the whole world in the process. These aren’t your standard popcorn and Pepsi kind of places – think fine dining, luxury seats (or even beds), a cocktail or two, and a truly unique film watching experience. Without further ado, lights, camera, action on the 7 coolest movie theaters in the world!

Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas Created in the eccentric city of Austin, Alamo Drafthouse has taken your standard movie theater and turned it into an art form. When you take your seat, a dutiful server will be on hand to serve you up cold beverages and some deliciously hot food. If you want more during the film, all you need to do is fill out your little Alamo order card and a ninja-like a server will appear from the dark in mere seconds ready to take your order.  What really makes Alamo Drafthouse stand out is their dedication to crafting a unique experience. Unlike watching ads, which are typical of your standard theaters, the team have created custom programming with content that is themed around the picture you’re watching. For example, if you watched the recent film, Jackie, there, you’d find videos and interviews of her personal life instead of your standard trailers or ads.

One more thing – they have an absolutely no talking or texting policy. They will remove you from the theater and they’re proud of it. Before the film starts that actually play a recorded phone message from a lady who was thrown out of one of their films…you have been warned.

Electric Cinema in London, UK In the one part of Notting Hill that is actually cool, you’ll find the classy and stylish Electric Cinema. The plush Electric features leather armchairs and cashmere blankets on every seat but if you really want to get the most of your visit here, you’re going to want to try and book one of the two-seater sofas at the back of the theater, or one of the luxurious double beds at the front. Like most of the cinemas on this list, the Electric also has a bar where you can find an upmarket wine list and a few delicious full meal options. If there is one issue with the Electric, it’s that the secret is most definitely out and you’ll have to book well in advance to get a seat!

Cineteca Matadero in Madrid, Spain Founded by a creative team who specialize in visual effects, the Cineteca Matadero is not the kind of cinema where you’ll find the latest blockbusters. The former slaughterhouse turned dream-like visual space feels less like a movie theater and more like a piece of contemporary art, which is fitting, as the films that play here are without fail experimental cinema and the latest and greatest documentaries. There is the occasional English language showing, but do bear in mind that it will be subtitled in Spanish.

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California

The world’s marquee film city needed one of the world’s marquee movie theaters and the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre has been happy to be a Hollywood institution for nearly a century. Grauman’s is unique as it brought the luxurious surroundings of high-end opera and plays to what was considered the low-end medium of film. The theater located in the heart of the Hollywood walk-of-fame is the undisputed second most famous landmark in Los Angeles, behind only that giant white sign.

Cinémathèque Française in Paris, France

We couldn’t have a list of the best movie theaters in the world without paying homage to the country responsible for creating the medium. The Cinémathèque Française is part movie theater and part museum. While it may not offer some of the other frills on this list, there is, of course, delightful wine available (it is France after all) and as well as all of the big blockbusters the theater holds numerous screenings and historical retrospectives honoring the medium.

Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, New York

Nitehawk is very, very cool and you wouldn’t expect anything less from a theater located in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Like Alamo Drafthouse, they don’t show ads or previews and have a delightful way of pairing the food they serve with the film that is being shown. It’s plush, posh, comfortable, stylish and, of course, expensive but oh-so-worth-it.

Newport Ultra Cinema in Newport City, Manila

We round off our list with the Newport Cinema in Manilla. It just snuck in ahead of some tough competition because it truly is a visual feast. Sure, they offer plush reclining seats, butler service, unlimited free popcorn and a wide variety of drinks, but the real pull of this theater is the design. You’ll feel like you’ve spent a few hours inside a neon sign, and while that might sound daunting, we assure you, it is amazing!

If you’re a film fanatic you need to make sure all of these movie theaters are on your BUCKiTDREAM list. If you’ve been before or do make the trip, make sure to share your experience with your fellow BUCKiTDREAMERs. Just wait until the films over to take those pictures!
