Have you found yourself in the Big Apple and now you’re ready to party hard? Make sure you tick off BUCKiTDREAM’s list of 9 crazy New York bars. From a boozy wax museum, to a cocktail den hidden in a hot dog shop, we guarantee it’ll be a night you’ll never forget. (Well, depending on how many mezcals you put back…)
Visit the World Famous Secret Bar Hidden Inside a Hot Dog Shop Once you walk into Crif Dog, a restaurant known for its handmade hot dogs, go inside and pick up the phone. Whisper the password and, as if by magic, a wall of the booth will slide open to reveal a secret speakeasy called Please Don’t Tell.
This bar is smart, with minimal decor – except for a bit of daunting taxidermy adorning the walls. Simply prop up at the bar and start sinking some seriously good cocktails. P.S. Booking ahead is mandatory, as this place is very much in demand.
Get Your Nails Done Over a Cocktail at Beauty Bar A converted beauty salon, this hip bar is now a big draw to New York’s eclectic crowd. It’s where you go if you want to sip a cocktail under an old school domed hair dryer where blue-haired ladies from the ’50s used to gossip.
Grab a $10 “Martini & Manicure” deal and get your nails done while sipping on an intoxicating cocktail. It’s very weird, but also very fun, and it’s a great first drink before hitting the town on a ladies’ night out.
Feel the Sand Between Your Toes Inside a Tropical-Themed Williamsburg Bar Think clam shack meets trattoria at Surf Bar, which certainly feels the part with its sandy floors and surf boards mounted on the ceiling. The food menu is on theme with seafood dishes like New England clam chowder and fried calamari.
Once you have your fill of food, grab a delicious tiki cocktail or frozen margarita, take a stroll out to the back patio and listen to some live music. You can’t help but feel that you’re on a beach vacation.
Address: 139 N 6th St, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Down Margaritas at a Hip Mexican Eatery Set in an Old Diner Pull up into a booth or take a stool at the bar in Café De Esquina, a casual yet cool joint that offers generous portions of classic Mexican dishes like nachos and tacos. Then grab some badass tequila-based cocktails and head out to the sizable patio, which is perfect for warm evenings.
Address: 225 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249 Dance on the Tables at the Famous Coyote Ugly Saloon This is the East Village party spot that sparked the name of the famous 2000 film. It’s the place to be if you’re looking for a wild night full of dancing on tables and body shots galore. It’s a bit on the sleazy side, but it’s certainly one to tick off the list – even if you just pop your head in to take a quick selfie with the sea of bras dangling from the ceiling.
Address: 153 1st Avenue, New York, NY 10009
Drink Inside a Block of Ice Parka jacket and gloves are handed to you before you enter the minus5° bar because, as the name of the bar explains, it’s a chilly minus 5 degrees in there. The place is made completely of ice, from floor to ceiling – from the walls, to the chandeliers, to the sculptures. Even your drink is served in an ice glass. Explore the different icy rooms and pose for a pic in your furs while you smile through chattering teeth. Just say, “c-c-c-cheese!”
Freak Out at a Weird Waxwork Bar With its collection of anatomical and pathological waxworks, this odd little cocktail den known as House of Wax is pretty unconventional. It’s a macabre display of creepy life-like feet, hands, arms and death masks of famous (and infamous) celebrities, all of which has been salvaged from a once popular Berlin museum, Castin’s Panopticum, from around from 1869-1922.
It’s a bit of a stomach-turner in here, but, of course, a couple of cocktails or beers at the bar will help all that. FYI – don’t take first dates here because they’ll probably run a mile away while screaming in terror.
Chuck Back Mezcal in a Secret Bar Behind a Freezer Door La Milagrosa is a little agave bar that’s new(ish) to the hip Williamsburg bar scene. To get to it, you need to enter the Mexican deli and pretend you’re doing your casual weekly shopping of dried chili peppers, chorizo and prickly pears. Then, when no one’s looking, open the freezer door and go into this debaucherous little booze den filled with live DJs and a sh*t ton of mezcal!
Address: 149 Havemeyer St, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Take a Dip at Le Bain Rooftop Bar This ‘penthouse discotheque’ is located on the top floor of the Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District. During the summer months, there’s an indoor plunge pool. Don’t be afraid to strip (but keep your pants on) and dive in, but be warned – it’s pretty darn hot in here. You might not last too long before jumping out for a refreshing drink and heading outside to drink cocktails on the rooftop, which has sweeping nighttime views of New York City. It’s an unforgettable party night.
Address: 848 Washington St, New York, NY 10014
